Drum and Bass - A History Lesson
Drum and Bass music is a genre of electronic music which started playing sometime in the late 80s to the early 90s. When the nightclub scene was brought outdoors, Rave was born. This consisted of upbeat music with erratic beats, break beats, and many different samples of music. As years passed by, Rave music started to change as further experimentation made it faster with a range of 127 up to 140 beats per minute. This change soon got the term "Jungle' as Jamaican influences started pouring in. Jungle was slowly breaking into the mainstream, however, music artists started to drift away from the Ragga influence, which was what makes Jungle music distinct. This type of music was polished and was made more sophisticated by technically enhancing the details within the music. The result was a lighter, but faster sound that falls between a range of 140 to 170 beats per minute. This super upbeat trait, along with a wide range of musical influences, was what made Drum and Bass, or simply DnB, what it is today. Although an exact description would be extremely difficult to formulate due to its musical diversity, DnB is one of the most popular genres played in rave parties up until today.

DnB focuses on the bass line. Its low frequencies is enough to make it possible to feel these bass lines, especially when played with really powerful speakers. Aside from the varied bass sounds achieved from electric and acoustic instruments, other effects are also applied to create a more distinct bass to each DnB track. As DnB focuses on the bass line, the kick drum is also given equal importance. This genre makes use of an 808 kick drum, which is an artificial sound sample that features a low-pitched elongated bass sound. Drum and Bass music is also known for its breaks because of the syncopated complexity it features. This is the part of a DnB track where producers would really spend tremendous amount of time and hard work on. The most commonly used break is called the "Amen Break" which was made famous by The Winstons through their track called "Amen Brother". These are the common ingredients in cooking up a great DnB track. The sound of each song may differ due to the many diverse influences that are used within this genre.

Current Mainstream Popularity
Many different sub-genres have been created from Drum and Bass music especially in these times of great sound technology. From its creation in the early 1980s, this genre has gradually made its way from the underground all the way to mainstream fame. In a world where the nightclub scene is dominated by House music and its sub-genres, DnB has caught attention through their fast beats and rich bass lines. People found their energy quickly pulsating from every part of their body to this type of music. DnB tracks were so upbeat that it would not be such a wonder why you would find yourself on the dance floor with heightened senses and a sweet rush like no other.
