Origin of Progressive House

This sub-genre of Electronic Dance Music is actually House Music made more complex. House was played in discotheques around the mid-80s. This music is meant to make people dance non-stop with its 4/4 beats that are played repetitively with drum beats, cymbals, and the synthesized sound of bass along with it. House focused more on the rhythm that plays repeatedly during a song. The name "Progressive House" was first used by the editor of Mixmag, Dom Phillips, in an attempt to describe the dance music of the UK artists under the Guerilla and Reinassance labels. Progressive meant advancement and promotion to a state that shows more progress than its former state. House music was made to sound more innovative and advanced by the addition of more musical elements with the intention of making it sound better, and because of this, "progressive" became the perfect word to describe this genre of music.

Progressive House - Over the Years

Since its recognition in the early 90s, Progressive House has changed in so many ways. If it did not, it would not have been called progressive until today. This type of music has been consistent to the definition of progressive by showcasing increments of improvements and advanced modifications as years pass by. Aside from House, Progressive House was also influenced by Trance and Techno. This is the reason there are Progressive House tracks that lean more into the technical and there are those that may seem deep and dark at some point. It is quite difficult to identify songs that fall under this genre of music especially in these days when numerous House sub-genres are popping out of every experimental attempt to create fresh dance music. Progressive House music is intended to keep you moving on the dance floor by alternating the peaks and troughs within a song. The different layers of sound in one track are brought out alternately in a certain rhythm. This complex movement of sounds typifies Progressive House.

Club Music at its Best

With the numerous sub-genres of House, not to mention other Electronic Dance Music sub-genres, it is almost expected for some dance-based music to lose its flavor in the long run. Progressive House has always been widely popular in nightclubs and discos. The music's layered sounds, complex beats, and unusual rhythm makes it very easy to dance to regardless of whether you can dance or not. It has become such a major part of the dance scene that it easily captivates the crowd's senses enough to make them want to move all night long. All tracks, from the early 90s up to the present that fall under this genre is still unmistakably hot on the dance floor. This music has sprawled its enchanting arms all over the world, making its presence heard in almost all dance clubs and parties in all timezones. Progressive House is one of the best in dance-based music genres to hit the clubs and it seems like it is going to stay that way for a very long time.
