How To Become Tumblr Famous - Get Famous

By

1. Come Up With A Niche

Your Tumblr should have a niche, or subject, to talk about. You can't just post all willy-nilly random information, unless you call your Tumblr "Random Information". You want your Tumblr to be named something appropriate to your niche. The bigger your niche, the bigger your audience.

The Top 10 Most Popular Tumblrs:

  1. staff.tumblr.com (26,420 views/day)
  2. stfumarrieds.tumblr.com (24,590 views/day)
  3. stfuparents.tumblr.com (21,623 views/day)
  4. juliasegal.tumblr.com (16,083 views/day)
  5. rulesformyunbornson.tumblr.com (15,542 views/day)
  6. thingsthatexciteme.tumblr.com (10,187 views/day)
  7. surveyspot.tumblr.com (9,956 views/day)
  8. papertissue.tumblr.com (9,914 views/day)
  9. whatiwore.tumblr.com (9,907 views/day)
  10. kari-shma.tumblr.com (8,776 views/day)
  11. garrett-rockstar.tumblr.com (Over NINE THOUSAAAAAND views/day)

The only way to get around this is to be female and post pictures of your boobs and you smoking marijuana. For some reason, Tumblr loves that and you will have tons of followers quickly. I don't advise this though.

RULE #1 OF BEING TUMBLR FAMOUS

Don't ask for followers, don't ask for reblogs, don't ask for anything.

That's a big no-no, and it won't make you Tumblr Famous. How many people do you see doing that every day? How many of them are Tumblr Famous? NONE.

2. Post Regularly

At least 3 posts a day, and spread them out. You can use the queue function to do this. My research shows that 2pm-10pm EST are the most popular times for people to be on Tumblr, so I would spread them out in there.

I really stress using the queue, especially if you post a lot every day. It's really annoying to log in and have 20 posts from the same blog in a row, or all with in one hour. I promise you that you will gain and KEEP more followers by spreading them out. Little doses is the key.

3. Tag Your Posts Appropriately

That's how people find you, and in turn, help you get more follows.

Use as many tags as you can think of, but ONLY use relevant tags. Try to think of things you would search for if you were looking for a post like the one you just wrote.

4. Follow Relevant Tumblrs

You want to follow the Tumblrs of people also talking about your niche. Not only will that help you by giving you ideas for things to write about, but it will give you things to reblog, and it may get you more followers. You not only want to follow these other Tumblr blogs, but become friends with them. Yes, technically they are competition, but you know what they say: "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."

Protip: Reblog their stuff every once in a while. 90% of your Tumblr posts should be original by you, but it's okay to reblog every once in a while, and you want to reblog these people because then they will start to recognize your name. And name recognition is basically the definition of Fame.

5. Build Social Media Profiles

You need to have an ACTIVE account with the same name as your blog with AT LEAST these:

The cool thing is, you can pretty much connect all of them to auto-post whenever you post to Tumblr. If you plan to make videos for your Tumblr (recommended, people love videos), I suggest posting them on YouTube and then posting the YT video on your Tumblr, instead of uploading straight to Tumblr.

If there's any other social-networking sites you know about, I would sign up for those and use them as well.

6. Get Active In The Online Community

Remember those social media profiles we set up in the last step? Yeah, lets use them.

Post to niche relevant forums, Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, YouTube, etc. That means, find the forums, tweeters, FaceBook pages, MySpace pages, and YouTube accounts that are talking about the same things as you, and post comments. This helps get your name and your Tumblr out there. Again, it's all about name recognition.

Sorry Josh, this was posted a long time ago and things have changed a lot.

Those are by far no where near the top 10 blogs. My blog only has 14k followers, received 45k hits this month, and there are thousands of blogs more popular then me. The most I know has over 200k followers.

Also left out that you need to stay on topic so people know what they will get, if you want a random tumblr then you can always make a second one. But your primary should be the main focus of something your into. Its like a restaurant that specializes in burgers if suddenly you walk and and theres fried chicken or just salad people get confused and you dont get a dedicated following.

Also get in the habit of stacking links i'm told. not sure if it works but if you click these links and add me please tell me, I wonder if this stuff really works. See below...

Good points, but you also need to tag as much as possible! ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS (can't stress this enough) TAG your posts. Whether its a photo, video, text, chat, or audio, GIF, WHATEVER kind of post TAG. Usually tag it with something such as 'LOL' and such. You can search popular tags too and see what the most visited blogs post and look at their tags and follow what they do. I never got looked at until I started tagging! In the first 2 weeks, i got 12 followers. Good luck and happy blogging! http://www.hannahgoesmew.tumblr.com

Basically, you can be an adult and have a nice educated blog that other adults will read and enjoy and have an actual "tumblelog", but to actually be "tumblr famous" you must

1. Be really skinny

2. Frequently post your body in a bathing suit/bra&underwear

3. Be hipster or mainstream

4. Reblog pictures of other girls in bathing suits/bra&underwear

5. Be insanely gorgeous

6. Be female

Easy, right?

@aidan I run multiple "tumblr famouse blogs" because of this and make a lot of money putting ads on them. You don't have to follow the advice but my rent being paid by my Tumblrs shows that everything I said here works.

aidan 4 months ago

pahaha, this advice is bullshit, if you only post 3 times a day you're not gonna get 'tumblr famous', a blog that only does this is nothing but boring and will lose you followers, also problem with having a blog with a niche is that you will only get people that like this thing where are a general blog will get you more followers. no one should listen to the advice on here if they planon being tumblr famous :L

Also, if you're into graphics, make GIFs and tumblr themes for people. It's another way to get your name out there.

Am not a tumbler user but recently i was planning to start tumbler account, which led me to read your hub, which has definitely helped me. you have shared some nice tips about using tumbler blogging, publishing blog by reblog and social media and to get name recognition, will follow your tips.

Nicky Page 5 months ago

Hi Garrett, I recently joined Tumblr and found this article very helpful. My niche is photography with the occasional poetry posts. I follow relevant Tumblr members and tag my posts appropiately. However, I only use Blogger and Flickr for auto-posts, which works well for me, but I've never built any backlinks, reblogged, or spaced out any of my daily posts... so thanks for the tips.

Garrett Mickley 6 months ago

@melbel You can ad Adsense HTML code into your theme. I don't, but the option is there for you if you like.

melbel 6 months ago

Tweeted this! I'll have to put more work into tumblr. Mine's kind of mixed bag right now. :S

Are there any ways to monetize tumblr?

brandasaur 6 months ago

I love Tumblr! :) Though im not an active member, i find Tumblr peeps passionate and very creative.

AllieRambles 6 months ago

Great post on Tumblr.

I actually started a Tumblr blog simply to create backlinks for my main blog. But recently it has started to turn into a quasi dumping ground for my personal rants or shares.

I still don't get Tumblr much so reading this will help.

Thx.
